Swamp Thing “Guardian of the Earth” was released in April 1991 under the FOX Kids banner.  The cartoon was tied to a toy collection created by Kenner.  After five episodes the series was cancelled.  The cartoon had reruns in the Sci-Fi Channel and lately in the Disney Channel.

The cartoon is loosely based on the DC Comics Swamp Thing character.  Dr. Alec Holland is a botanist that created a plant-growth formula to stop world hunger.  The cartoon main villain is Dr. Anton Arcane that tries to steal the formula with his Un-Men Henchcreatures.

During the attempt to steal the formula the villains blow up the laboratory and send DR. Holland engulfed on burning formula into the swamp creating the Swamp Thing.  The series cannot be compared with the DC comics but it is fun to view.

The DIC Entertainment released the first episode “The Un-Men Unleashed” in the 90’s.  During the early 2000’s the company released all five episodes in DVD under the “Animation Station” series.  The series has been out of print for a few years now and it is becoming harder to find.
